The Lake Needs Your Help !

Home

Greers Ferry Lake is one of the most pristine lakes in the United States; an incredibly beautiful reservoir formed by Greers Ferry Dam, a United States Army Corps of Engineers dam. The reservoir consists of two lakes connected by a water-filled gorge called the Narrows. The area of the two lakes and the Narrows totals about 40,500 acres with a combined shoreline of just over 340 miles. In the 1800s there was once a city, Higden, under this lake.  Greers Ferry Lake is located in Northern Arkansas about 60 miles north of Little Rock.

Save Greers Ferry Lake, Inc. is a non-profit organization working to safeguard and maintain Greers Ferry Lake's clean water and natural environment through public education and legal action, as needed.

In 2000 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposed a Shoreline Management Plan that threatened the lake's natural shoreline by allowing a large number of new private boat docks.  A group of concerned citizens banned together and formed Save Greers Ferry Lake, Inc.  SGFL joined with the Arkansas Nature Alliance and successfully sued the Corps to force a reexamination of the Plan and reduce the number of new docks that would be allowed.

In 2004 the Arkansas Wildlife Federation awarded its prestigious "Water Conservationist of the Year" award to SGFL, Inc.  The award, which honors groups and individuals who have made significant contributions to promoting the conservation of Arkansas' natural resources, was given for SGFL's efforts to protect the lake.

SGFL volunteers continue to monitor activities that might adversely impact the Greers Ferry Lake.  We welcome input from the public, including any concerns about the future welfare of this increasingly important source of flood control, power, clean drinking water and recreation.
